Eat foods that aid the immune system

foods that aid the immune system

Read this article to find out in a nutshell, what foods we should be eating to aid the immune system.

According to Harvard Health "Malnutrition or a diet lacking in one or more nutrients can impair the production and activity of immune cells and antibodies." So one of the best things we can do is eat a well balanced diet.

I recently viewed a Dr Oz show where he explained what he called the specific super foods in each food group that should be eaten daily.

He has simplified everything and has done all the research so I figure these ideas are a good bet to help the immune system.

Most people will have grown up knowing that food can help strenghthen the immune system in some ways. My grandmother always gave us lemon and honey drinks to ward off a cold or a sore throat. Some families believe in chicken soup as a panacea and in India you may grow up drinking tumeric in your tea.

Dr Oz talks about what he considers specific super foods. He gave the food groups cute names describing what they did in the body: the fighting 5, tumor torpedoes, cell commando foods, and fire fighters. Here is an explanation of his foods that aid the immune system:

The fighting 5 - fruits and vegetables - highly recommended are broccoli, tomato and carrot all lightly cooked, also acai, blueberries, oranges and strawberries. Basically eat 5 fruits and or vegetables a day.

Broccoli is a great source of vitamins K and C, folic acid potassium, and fiber.
Broccoli is a cruciferous vegetable that fights free radical damage.

Tumor Torpedoes - whole grains - 3 servings a day help detox the digestive system. This includes flaxseeds, oats, quinoa, whole grain bread and whole grain pasta.

vitamins in quinoa
Quinoa is gluten free and low in carbs.

Cell Commando Foods - Proteins - lean proteins such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, tofu, beans and soy milk.

vitamins in tofu
Tofu contains all 9 essential amino acids.
Fire Fighters - herbs and spices - recommended are tumeric, garlic, curry, cinnamon, ginger, chives and basil.

vitamins in chives
Chives are a herb of the onion genus

Do you like this way of simplifying the healthy food groups? Does it help you? Are you a great believer, like me, in the power of food to heal? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
